BOLT ENSEMBLE

The BOLT Ensemble is a pool of musicians who perform in-house JOLT productions and repertoire. The BOLT Ensemble and The Amplified Elephants have invited guest artists to perform on bills with them for the BOLT Invitation Shows. This week, this sound world elides into a graphic score by JOLT Artistic Director James Hullick — with the score being performed by JOLT’s pioneering chamber ensemble, the BOLT Ensemble. This piece was previously performed with legendary performance artist, Stelarc.

ENSEMBLE FOR THIS SHOW

π.O

Melbourne institution, poet π.O, was inspired to start writing poetry in 1973. His work ranges from standup-type rants to ‘conceptual’ page poetry and concrete poetry, with a heavy emphasis on wordplay and capturing the vitality of everyday speech. Thematically, he commonly portrays the issues of non-Anglo-Celtic working class life.

KATHRYN SUTHERLAND

Kathryn Sutherland has built her music career through The Amplified Elephants, being a founding member with the group in 2006 at the Footscray Community Arts Centre. Alongside her work with The Elephants, Kathryn has developed a solo body of work centred on the drum kit and electronic music. Kathryn’s sound is an abstracted physical world that is instinctive, playful and often quite arresting in its beauty and power. For this project, Kathryn performs alongside her mentor: legendary Australian percussionist Peter Neville. Kathryn and Peter will perform an excerpt from their earlier collaboration, BODY.

ESTHER TUDDENHAM

Esther Tuddenham is a sound artist, poet, photographer and intermedia creative mind. She explores human emotions and their utterance in her work, and participates in JOLT’s weekly creative workshops. Esther will join Kathryn Sutherland to collaborate on an improvisation with electronics.
