ABOUT CROSSINGS
Participating artists explore the experience of crossing to new places with photography, digital media, painting, drawing and performance art. The project has been partly inspired by arts projects that some of the artists delivered in Japan in 2023. When we travel or arrive at a new place, it is often the case that we see that place with fresh eyes: that we experience the new place differently to those who are there permanently.
Astrid Meurer has reimagined her experience as a touring artist in Japan by creating digital drawings that refocus our perspective of Japanese city life and architecture. Esther Tuddenham has an elegant eye for photographic design. This eye resonates strikingly with the urban landscapes of Japan. Andrew Crosling has been exploring a range of works based on CEO’s as a topic for performance art. Through his CEO characters Andrew transforms himself and travels into personalities that have been typically denied to him. Matthew Ward has been exploring the medium of watercolour as a way of bringing colour and vibrance to his work. A key focus for Matthew has been the world of work: from airports to labourers. Here Matthew translates himself – like Andrew – into new personas and identities.
The exhibition will be going to Japan in November and exhibited at Bank Art Station Gallery with other JOLT artists and performances.
JOLT Arts is assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.
